Tips for Students New to Online Learning
By Rose Rodriguez, FLVS Full Time Music Instructor
For those who have yet to experience online learning, you may be asking yourselves, where do we start?! How do we stay on track without seeing our classmates and teachers every day? Not to worry – we’ve compiled these helpful tips to get you set up and ready to go with your new online learning environment.
Have a Designated Space for School Work
If you haven’t created one yet, our first piece of advice is to have a designated area to do your school work. This will help ensure you’re in the right mindset to study. You want your space to be somewhat private, so having a door that can be closed and is in a quiet area of the house is preferred. You also want to ensure there is enough light for reading and taking notes. Don’t forget to keep school supplies on hand! If you haven’t already, check out our previous post with 5 Things You Need to Get Ready for Virtual School.
Manage Your Time Wisely
To be successful in an online learning environment, you’ll want to build out a schedule (with breaks included) that can help you stay on track throughout the day. Designate set times of the day to study and focus on one thing at a time. Since you have the flexibility at home, block extra time for subjects that take you a bit longer. Include time for unexpected interruptions and breaks, like taking the dog for a walk.
Make Sure You Have the Necessary Equipment
Although it may be tempting, try not to use your smartphone to complete classwork. A desktop computer or laptop are your best options because you can save your work and download any required programs or software. Consider turning your cell phone completely off when studying or completing assignments so you’re not distracted by text messages and notifications. You may also want to use headphones to keep outside distractions to a minimum.
Use Your Network
This tip comes from the Northeastern University article 8 Strategies for Getting the Most Out of an Online Class, where they suggest actively keeping in touch with your classmates. Online communication is a great alternative to the face-to-face contact you would normally have in your classroom. If you have a test or exam coming up that you need to study for, don’t be afraid to reach out and connect with your study buddies over video chat. Just because you can’t sit with them during study hall doesn’t mean you can’t still collaborate and engage with them online.
Completing classes and assignments online has all kinds of benefits! You can set your own schedule, create your ideal learning space, and complete your work on your own time. Although it may seem intimidating at first, there are endless resources available to you through Florida Virtual School that will help you remain on track and successful.
